10 Road Test Mistakes Most People Don’t Know About (Part 1)

Updated: Dec 17, 2025

Every week, drivers in Winnipeg share their test sheets and experiences and many of the mistakes are things people don’t even realize before their road test.

So we’re starting a short series where we break down 10 real mistakes that cause drivers to fail.

Here are the first 2 mistakes, along with one real test sheet sent to us:

1. Missing shoulder checks while reversing or parallel parking

We’ve added a real test sheet here showing an example of this mistake that caused the driver to fail.

When reversing or doing a parallel park, you must check your mirrors and do proper shoulder checks to make sure :

no one is behind your car like a pedestrian,

if a vehicle is coming from behind, you stop and wait for them.

2. Improper Turning A Major Reason People Fail

Turning mistakes usually include:

  • Wrong approach (bad position or angle before the turn)

  • Incorrect turn (too wide, too sharp, leaving your lane)

  • Improper speed (too fast or too slow)

Here is a real test sheet from someone who failed it shows these exact mistakes during turning.

And remember :

even one of these errors can be enough to fail the road test.

If you’ve taken your road test recently, feel free to share your experience below.

I failed once because I blocked the left lane while making a left turn. The officer explained that when turning left, I should keep to the right side of the street instead of blocking the left lane.

This explains why I failed my road test. The shoulder check part is very accurate.👌

I can relate to this a lot. I failed twice just because of shoulder checks. I didn't realize how strict they are about it until it was too late.

“I failed my test because I didn’t do a full shoulder check during parallel parking.
I honestly didn’t think it was that serious until I saw the test sheet.”
